Review of the Mercedes Benz

The all-new Mercedes Benz E 63 AMG sports a hyper-aggressive front end, with a gaping warthog-like air intake framing the new E-class LED headlights. It might not be be to everyone's liking, but it looks better in the flesh and is way more in your face than before.

On paper, it doesn't look much different in terms of chasis and power-train. The original E63 AMG packed a 6.2 litre naturally-aspirated gem of a V8, it was then replaced by the same 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 you see today.

While it is mechanically similar to before on paper, it also feels much more complete now.

The E63's 557bhp V8 doles out prime moving force effortlessly, with seemingly bottomless levels of power and a stirring soundtrack to match, while the refinement and poise of the car ensure you'll run out of guts long before it does.

Yet, it is not a driver-basher. A more accurate front end gives the confidence to carry more speed everywhere, while taut but comfortable ride quality means you don't feel like it'll spit you out of hairpins.

Provided you leave the traction control button alone, it's easy to forget you're driving a car with a gut-busting 720Nm of torque.

AMG buttons on the dash let you tweak drivetrain and suspension settings individually, but the car's natural poise means you can cruise contentedly or frighten your passenegers silly at the drop of a hat.

It's the positive front end and supportive nature of the new car that make it truly fun to drive, something the previous machine, and even its current key rival the BMW M5, both lack. Ally this to the fact that the twin-turbo V8 sounds as fantastic idling as it does apeing a low-flying Spitfire on the highway, and you have a modern E-class AMG that combines Hammer-style power with a new poise all of its own.
